WHY STRETCH WHEN YOU FIRST TUMBLE OUT OF BED?

Do you remember to stretch as soon as you tumble out of bed? It's an essential routine for rousing your body and mind. Follow these tips from Domyos and start your day off right!

Stretching when you wake up: good for body and mind!

Did you have a short night's sleep or wake up with a bang? No matter how you feel when you first open your eyes, don't skip out on your stretches. These are essential for starting the day off right, and they help your body find the energy that it needs for the day ahead. Thoroughly stretching upon getting out of bed relaxes your body and helps you tank up for the day. Treat yourself to a relaxing pause before jumping into your day!

Get the energy you need

Stretching first thing in the morning is a nice, gentle way to bring your body's energy into balance. Shake off the rust that you feel when first tumbling out of bed, and give your body a needed boost.

  • Muscles that are stretched to their optimum length will absorb more oxygen and flush out more toxins.
  • Lengthening your spinal column helps release energy that was dormant while you slept.
  • Muscles, joints and bones that are well stretched encourage good blood circulation.

Improve your mobility

Stretching helps your muscular tissue and joints be more flexible. The result is that your muscles will feel more dynamic and your body will be more mobile. Stretching exercises help prevent daily aches and pains as well as stress from building up throughout the day.

The 3-minute stretch: start the day off right

  • Stand with legs straight, feet spread a foot or so apart. Slowly roll your head in a circular motion while keeping your chin tucked in.
  • Round your back and then straighten it again one vertebra at a time.
  • Extend your arms and swing them forward.
  • Keep your legs straight while bending over, shifting your body's weight slightly forward, until you are looking through your knees.
  • The rest of your body should be as relaxed as possible. There should be no tension in your arms or neck. Just let your torso naturally lower itself down—no forcing. Remember to breathe deeply from your stomach, and focus on clearing your mind. Relax and stay in this position for 3 minutes.
  • Keeping your arms and shoulders relaxed, slowly bring yourself up to an upright position by stretching each of the following body parts: pelvis, lower back (lumbar), back (dorsal), spine (cervical column).

Take the time to do these exercises as soon as you step out of bed, before rushing into your day, to help your body tank up and start off right!
