How to feel full of energy during summer

Start the day with a breakfast that is full of energy

Having not eaten all night, and with a new day dawning, your breakfast will set the tone for the day and get you both physically and mentally ready. It should contain about ¼ of your daily food consumption.

A balanced breakfast is composed of:

  • A cereal product (bread, cereal, rusks, etc.) to fill you with energy
  • A dairy product (milk, yoghurt, cream cheese, etc.) to give you lots of calcium,
  • Fresh fruit for plenty of vitamins,
  • A drink so you start the day well hydrated.

 

Fruit: concentrated fuel...

Fruit plays a special role for your health because it is bursting with so-called micronutrients: vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants whose role is to protect your body.

 

We are often told that vitamins give you energy! Yet they don't add any calories! The reality is that vitamins will not give you energy by themselves, but they do still play a role in making us feel energised. What makes them essential is that they help the body to absorb everything else we eat. Vitamins are vital substances that the body cannot produce by itself. Our diet is therefore the only source of vitamins for our bodies.

Eat seasonal fruit, taking advantage of the wide variety of flavoursome and colourful fruits available in summer. Two or three times a day is a good amount.

 

Food that boosts your energy

  • Water

Drinking water is the simplest and fastest way of boosting your energy. Dehydration can rob your body of energy and therefore affect your mood and how energetic you feel.

  • Starch

Starch is rich in complex carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are essential nutrients that provide your body with energy all day long. Starch often has a bad reputation for making you put on weight. This is a misconception though because it is rich in carbohydrates which are vital, among other things, for our muscles and brains. Carbohydrates are the body's main fuel. They are only stored as fat if you eat too many of them.

  • Pollen

Pollen is a very good source of vitamin B. It helps to fight fatigue.

  • Walnuts

Walnuts contain plenty of omega 3, an essential fatty acid that slows down cortisol production (the stress hormone) by increasing the amount of serotonin produced (the happiness hormone). What is more, walnuts are particularly rich in vitamins E and B, as well as minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium and iron.

Walnuts are therefore ideal as snacks.

  • Chocolate

Dark chocolate is rich in magnesium, a mineral that helps fight fatigue, stress and anxiety. Eating chocolate encourages your body to secrete endorphins, the happiness hormone. Chocolate also makes you feel comforted and satisfied. Unfortunately however, you should only eat chocolate in moderation as it is rich in fat. Nevertheless, a block of dark chocolate each day can round off a meal very nicely...

  • Citrus fruits

Citrus fruits are bursting with vitamin C. This vitamin is a powerful antioxidant that gives a real boost to our immune systems and helps us stave off infections.
