Boxing is not just for men

Many women perceive boxing as a violent sport where two quasi-inhuman brutes face off against each other mercilessly. But make no mistake, ladies; each year more and more women are being seduced by this uncommon sport. It's an excellent means for them to break out of their daily routine, and let off steam and release the stress that all women are faced with at times.

Women's boxing is therefore an increasingly popular discipline with an increasing number of enthusiasts each year. While it has lacked recognition in France, where it also receives very little media coverage, the sport is seeking to carve out a place for itself in the tight-knit world of combat sports—a male-dominated domain. It also seeks to break out of the clichés and preconceptions that still surround the world of boxing. Because after all, boxing is for women too!

OK, boxing it is! Now, which kind?

Since there are different types of boxing, here is a summary of the most popular to help you decide which are best suited to you as a woman.

Savate (French) boxing

In Savate (French) boxing, both punches and kicks are allowed (see full article). Its aesthetically-pleasing aspect make it a favourite among women.

Thai boxing

Thai boxing works out the entire body, since hits of all kinds are allowed. It's an ideal sport for sculpting the entire body and learning how to use it to the full. It's a very tiring sport since it requires a great deal of strength and less strategy than English or French boxing. It is not yet widely practised among women.

American kickboxing

American kickboxing or full-contact karate is a highly physically demanding sport as people who practise this sport are continuously raising their legs above waist level. This is a sport where the beauty of the movements are emphasized and desirable.

English boxing

English boxing, commonly simply referred to as boxing, is the most well-known and widely-practised boxing sport among women. It has a highly strategic element, as only the fists may be used, and the head is the only target. The large increase in news coverage and films about women and boxing (such as Million Dollar Baby) in recent years has made the sport highly popular among women. It requires finesse and rapid movement. It is definitely the most difficult type of boxing to master as it is very difficult to win a fight. In 2012 women's (English) boxing came into its own as it was included as an official sport at the Olympic Games for the first time. Glorious victory indeed!

Please remember that women must equip themselves properly while boxing to avoid injuries. They should of course wear all the standard protections, as well as women-specific ones such as a chest guard.

In summary, boxing is a difficult practice that represents a genuine challenge for the female gender. It requires a great deal of determination and patience to achieve satisfying results. Having said that, it is the perfect discipline for boosting your endurance, resistance and sculpting the body of your dreams! Ladies, to your gloves!
